9 Ways to Reduce Screen Strain from Our Kelowna Optometry Clinic

These days, it’s nearly impossible to go even a few hours day without gazing at some sort of screen. At our Kelowna optometry clinic, we often see patients suffering from headaches, dry eyes, and blurry vision caused by too much screen time. Although visiting your optometrist regularly is a good thing, eyestrain is not. Before your eyes get to this point, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you avoid the symptoms of computer-related eyestrain.

  1. Try to work with black or dark-coloured text on a white background. Websites and documents that have a lot of hard-to-read text on colourful backgrounds can make your eyes work extra hard to read. Combine that with the glare coming off the monitor, and you’ve got a recipe for eyestrain.
  1. Check to make sure that your monitor is focused. It’s also important to adjust the brightness settings to match the amount of light in the room. If your screen is unfocused and either too bright or too dark, your eyes will become irritated by trying to continually adjust to these less than ideal conditions.
  1. Adjust your monitor so that it sits approximately seven inches below your horizontal line of sight. This is a more natural position for reading and reduces eye irritation.
  1. Use a good quality monitor that has a refresh rate of at least 60 hertz to reduce flickering. Flickering is one of the leading causes of eyestrain.
  1. The next time you visit a Kelowna optometry clinic residents trust, ask about the importance of the 20-20-20 rule. They recommend taking a brief break every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds by staring at an object roughly 20 feet away.
  1. Extend the 20-20-20 rule by taking a five minute break every hour or so. This little trick can help you feel refreshed and reduce muscle fatigue in both your eyes and your body.
  1. Check in on your breathing regularly. Often, computer work can take a lot of concentration and focus. By pausing and taking a few deep breaths and forcing yourself to blink a couple times, you can help keep eyestrain at a minimum.
  1. Invest in an anti-reflective screen. Distracting reflections and glare are the leading factors in eyestrain and can easily be reduced with the proper equipment.
