Your Kelowna Optometry Clinic Explains Eyewear Care

Some people spend hours at their Kelowna optometry office trying on different eyeglass frames that complement not only their face and features but also their style. It can be an arduous process, but looking great in a pair of prescription glasses is well worth the invested time and expense. What can you do to help keep those stylish frames and high quality lenses in tiptop shape?

Things You Should Do

Hands first. Before cleaning your prescription eyeglasses, make sure you thoroughly wash and dry your hands first. This will prevent debris, lotion, oil, or dirt from undoing all your cleaning efforts.

Turn your tap on. Under room temperature water, run your glasses under the stream, making sure to rinse both the lenses and the frame. This will help remove any particles that could potentially scratch and damage your eyewear while cleaning.

Using the soft microfiber cloth provided by your Kelowna optometry office, gently rub both the lenses and the frames. You may want to focus on the areas that rest on your face and collect oil from your skin. Once clean, allow your cloth to dry before putting it away.

Things You Shouldn’t Do

There are a few things you may want to avoid doing when it comes to maintaining the condition of your prescription eyewear. These seemingly harmless acts can cause damage and may decrease the lifespan of your favourite pair of glasses.

Don’t use the bottom of your shirt or sleeve to wipe smudges and debris from the lenses. Although using your shirtsleeve may seem like a convenient and harmless way to clean your lenses, you can actually scratch them. These scratches can impair your vision more than the smudges you initially tried to remove.

Just add water. Although there are solutions available for cleaning eyewear, they aren’t usually necessary. Lukewarm water and a soft cloth can do the trick just as well as any solution. If you prefer to use a specialized solution, avoid ones that contain ammonia. This harmful chemical will actually strip away the lens coating over time.

Keep Those Contact Lenses Clean Too

Employing proper handling techniques when it comes to your contact lenses is one of the most important things you can do to prevent eye irritation and increase their life span. To ensure your prescription contact lenses last as long as they’re supposed to, follow these guidelines.

  • Always thoroughly wash your hands with soap before removing or placing contact lenses in your eye. Don’t forget to dry your hands with a clean towel as well
  • Remove one lens at a time and place it in the palm of your hand
  • Using the recommended solution, apply a few drops to the lens
  • Gently use your fingertip to rub the lens, removing any build up or debris
  • Use a few more drops of the solution to rinse the lens
  • Place clean contact lens in its case as directed by your Kelowna optometry office
  • Repeat with the remaining lens
